New Orleans CORE
This is the 1961 arrest photo for CORE member Dave Dennis as a Freedom Rider in Jackson, Mississippi. At the time he was a 20 years old student at Dillard University.
A member of New Orleans CORE, he became a field director for CORE in Mississippi replacing Tom Gaither. He was also the co-director of the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) which organized the Freedom Summer project in 1964. He has become one of the most well known CORE members especially due to his moving eulogy at the funeral of murdered CORE worker James Chaney.
Dennis went on to get his JD from the University of Michigan Law School and is now the director of the Southern Initiative of Algebra Project, a "nonprofit organization that uses mathematics as an organizing tool to ensure quality public school education for every child in America" especially Black and other non-White students.*

Affectionately known as 'Big Duck', he was viciously beaten as a result of his participation.

After he was arrested, his case went all the way to the Supreme Court at which it was overturned and eventually helped set a precedent against the practice of segregation
A student at Xavier University at the time, he went on to get a PhD in urban planning from Syracuse University.
