At the time he was a 20 years old student at Dillard University. A member of New Orleans CORE, he became a field director for CORE in Mississippi replacing Tom Gaither. He was also the co-director of the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) which organized the Freedom Summer project in 1964. He has become one of the most well known CORE members especially due to his moving eulogy at the funeral of murdered CORE worker James Chaney.
